Explanations by Michel André
For the first time a boat will be permanently equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and will undertake sound mapping of the oceans on a scale so far unprecedented.
The 20,000 Sounds under the Seas programme will detect and automatically classify sounds – of natural and human origin – throughout Fleur de Passion's journey and will relay them in real time back to the LAB researchers on land. These underwater sounds and images from cameras mounted on the sensors will be simultaneously uploaded to the expedition's website and made available to the public at large.
The continuous stream of sound data will be analysed in order to understand the challenges facing the oceans today and will help the scientific community as well as government authorities to promote a responsible approach and good practices on the part of users of the oceans.
